The Children’s Garden, one of the beds in the Demo Garden, was awarded the International Master Gardener Search for Excellence Award for Youth 2009. This garden was developed in the Fall of 2004 in order to make it possible for children to learn the basics of gardening in a fun and education way.
The theme, Follow the Yellow Brick Road, takes visitors to explore many Specialty Gardens: the ABC Garden groups plants by beginning sounds; the Pizza Garden teaches fractions; plants in the Animal Friendly Garden contain animal names in their common name; and the Fragrance Garden encourages children to take time to smell the flowers. Good nutrition is emphasized and encouraged while touring Mr. McGregor’s Garden and other areas of the Children’s Garden where vegetables are grown. Tours are provided to schools in Lafayette and surrounding parishes. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are assisted with their gardening merit badges and 4-H members with plant identification.
The program is the first Master Gardener Children’s Garden in Louisiana. In addition to the Children’s Garden, LPMGA collaborates with LSU AgCenter’s School Garden Initiative (SGI) to provide grants and volunteers who assist the SGI in its efforts to bring rewarding gardening experiences to school age children.
